Celebrations of Ramadan in Egypt
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims all over the world as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, community and charity.
In Egypt, Ramadan is observed from 10nd March 2024 until 09th April 2024 (approx.) If you visit during this period, you will notice beautifully coloured decorations erected across streets and buildings, lights and lanterns hang on most doorways and all businesses and shops are brightly decorated.
In any Egyptian resort, village or city you will find huge, long tables erected in the middle of roads, running down side streets or taking over the main high street, all these individual tables are put together to seat any number of people, from 1 to 500 or more. During the day, these tables are empty, just tablecloths and chairs waiting, ready to host the local community at sunset.
The atmosphere is calm, quiet, and reflective during the day but comes alive as the first prayer of the Islamic day (Maghrib) signals the start of Iftar (the breaking of the fast, or breakfast). Suddenly those long empty tables are full of activity, juice and water are laid out and plates among plates of various hot dishes are served to the community by the community, this is done daily for the entirety of the holy month of Ramadan. These local Iftar banquets are completely free, organized and donated to by individuals, neighbours, mosques, charities, and local businesses. In Islam, Muslims are asked to share 2.5% of their annual savings to charitable projects and helping those in need. This act of giving can be witnessed during Ramadan where anyone can join and be welcomed at Iftar, a truly spectacular humbling experience, supporting and providing sustenance to those that need it most.
Eid al-Fitr is the ‘Feast’, a public and religious holiday that celebrates the end of Ramadan. This is THE best time to indulge and enjoy some delicious Egyptian cookies, biscuits, and deserts, as traditionally these are gifted among family and friends and brought into workplaces to share with colleagues.
In Egypt this ‘feast’ also signifies a four-day celebration where you will find parties, concerts, DJ’s, beach and music festivals. All resorts are bustling with energy and excitement. Families travel and celebrate together, and the atmosphere is jubilant and euphoric. This is an amazing time to visit Egypt and should you choose to join us during this period, please do book in advance.
